“We are ready. The infrastructure is ready. Our teachers are ready,” Principal Leornard Mudavhi assured his pupils and parents as full-time school restarted for all South African students today. This ends a full two years of rotational school where no more than 50% of students were allowed to come each day. In effect, everyone hopes this will also end the 50% loss of learning and set-backs that all students have struggled to overcome. Masks must be still be worn and windows kept open for ventilation, but social distancing is out and socializing is back. South Africa is “moving on” by learning to live – and learn — despite Covid in its midst.
