The best day of the year for teens in South Africa’s townships isn’t Black Friday.
Half-price sneakers and discount jeans may be a great deal, but the real deal for 16-year-old Hope and the other kids in our mentorship program is having a safe space, with access to technology, where they can study and connect with their Video Mentors.
Your support empowers them with the educational tools, skills and support they need to build themselves a brighter, financially independent future.
The LaunchPads installed by our Infinite Family in their Alexandra, Khayelitsha, and Soweto communities provide computers, internet access and a quiet place for them to do research, homework and study for tests. As well as a private space for their weekly one-on-one mentorship calls.
Together, the resources YOU provide support our teens to:
- Stay motivated and escape the distractions of township life.
- Focus on the schoolwork that will open doors further education and secure jobs.
- Attain the financial stability they choose for themselves.
YOU can give them the chance they need.
Take Hope. At 6, she lost her mother and has since lived at Nkosi’s Haven, an Photo of Hope at Laptopwho’s in the US, and they’ve been together ever since … At 18, she passed Matric with a Bachelors’ Pass and planned to study medicine or dentistry but a disappointing snafu with financial aid ended that dream and she found herself with an unwanted ‘gap year’.
Undaunted, she used the time well, teaching herself how to braid hair and earn money while she sorted out her scholarships and applied to new university programs that became available this year. As of last week, she’s been accepted at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to study Nuclear Medical Technology starting in January 2025!
Thanks to support from our Infinite Family over the past 7 years, Hope’s relationship with her mentor, Nicole, has strengthened her resilience and fueled her hard work.
The final result? Today, Hope knows she is ready for all of the challenges ahead and is excited to bring her focus and persistence to serve her future patients
On 3 December, Global Giving will generously match ALL gifts up to $1,800.
Today only, your gift can help transform the future for teens like Hope, teens that just need a chance, and a little extra support, to prove their potential. Here’s how your gift can directly make a difference:
keeps ink in our printers, so students can print out their study notes. (Not an option they have at school or at home.)
covers the infrastructure costs to support weekly mentorship sessions for one student
provides 5 students with access every day to computers and the internet.
funds a college student with the books they need for a year
buys a new laptop for Net Buddies to do homework and assignments
in the LaunchPad. (We need 12 this year.)
Please make the most of this Giving Tuesday and amplify your support for our teens!
