One of the many reasons we’re always so happy to celebrate good news, like the donation by Solar MD, is that our teens have way, way more than their share of difficult times. The result is a startling increase in the rates of depression and suicide among young South Africans, especially those who grow up in extreme poverty.
As these articles from a reputable local media house highlight, it starts early, with toxic stress caused by horrifyingly common experiences of abuse and violence. And in the teenage years, the burden translates to a cognitive strain that means many struggle to keep up in class, fall behind in their schoolwork, and are, effectively, set up for failure.
Unless … they are fortunate enough to have the consistent support of a caring adult who is as invested in helping them prepare for the future as they are themselves.
That could be YOU!
Although everyone in our Infinite Family is special to us, the reality is that our teens and volunteers are all just beautifully ordinary people who are working together to overcome extraordinary circumstances … and that the relationships that develop between them are all it takes to help these badly disadvantaged kids meet their potential.
The weekly Video Conference calls (VCs) between our NetBuddies and their network of Video Mentors around the world is a turnaround strategy that works!
Aside from helping Net Buddies improve their English skills (essential for the work world), interaction with a mentor who can guide them through the challenges they face in class, and in life. These discussions positively impact both their academic performance and their sense of personal empowerment!
More than that, we know that Infinite Family is a lifeline for teens in abusive situations and is the saving grace that has intercepted many suicide attempts.
