Monyane Moves Forward

Half of South African teens drop out of school before 12th grade. Monyane expected to be one of them. He felt he should work to help support his family. Then maybe his mom wouldn’t have to find shoes for him and his siblings at the local dump. No matter how hard she scrubbed, everyone always knew his shoes were only new “to him,” not store-bought new.

Instead, his Video Mentor, Barbara, convinced him to stick with it through final exams. Then, he qualified for college and a new path was chosen. Today, describing the importance of getting his business degree, he says, “I’m living the good life now. I can go and buy shoes for my brother.” By advancing his education, Monyane will now earn an average of 5 times more than if he had dropped out. That’s an impressive return on investment!

Help Infinite Family provide online GED preparation to more Black teens finish high school, go to college, and support themselves and their families. This week only GlobalGiving will match your gift!
